Providence St. Joseph Health is calling a Principal Product Design I to be based remote in Washington, Oregon, or California.

The Digital Innovation Group (DIG) at Providence is a small but mighty product development and incubation team. We build next-gen tools that give patients convenient and easy access to health care anywhere, anytime.
DIG is both a healthcare startup and a technology/product incubator. Our team gathers market data on effective solutions in the health care space and then builds out a product line with the latest and greatest technology. When market maturity hits, DIG enables the product to spin out as its own company. It is a unique mix of venture capitalists, digital strategists, marketing acumen, product development and engineering all in one group nestled inside one of the largest health systems. We set the pace for other health care organizations around the country on how to conceive, engineer and launch effective health care solutions.
This is a vital role for the Digital Innovation Group at Providence. The Principal Product Designer I will be responsible for over-seeing the product/product line vision from high level (How does this feature work? Does this feature make sense for the long-term vision) to low level execution (How does the styling of this button impact user flow through the system and the usability of the system?). The Principal Product Designer I will work end-to-end on the product development, contributing to the business thinking and translating business and user requirements during the design phase into world-class digital experiences. The position reports to the Associate Vice President of Product Design and must establish and maintain effective working relationships with management and staff at all levels of Providence Health & Services staff, vendors, agents, and others.
In this position you will:
Develop and facilitate creative problem solving processes and environments, resulting in product-line and group-level impact
Anticipate design trends and looks for ways to keep the application design standards modern and contemporary
Creates influence strategies that cross organizational boundaries to achieve broad business goals
Provide visual design stewardship through the design and direction of the aesthetic vision
Deep understanding of fundamental visual design disciplines (typography, iconography, composition, color, composition, layout, etc.)
Produce great designs that shine with simplicity despite complexity of the system
Establish a product-line visual/sensory framework, spatial model, and end-to-end flow
Envisions and establishes new input models with universal use value that have product-line level impact
Use prototypes to communicate product-line concepts, narratives, and experience value propositions. These prototypes embody the intended customer and business value, are defensible in the marketplace, and are an authentic expression of our brand values
Ability to quick think and assimilate complex issues and ideas
Transforms design processes, tools, and methodologies over successive releases to improve quality and alignment to engineering workflows
Find opportunities for collaboration across groups, disciplines, and professions in the division, ensures that cross-team commitments are set, and achieves scale in his or her work efforts by enabling the work of others. Ensures that the right people with the right knowledge and expertise are involved in decisions
Tailor communication to a variety of audiences and perspectives, and anticipate issues to prevent conflict
Incorporate diverse perspectives to thoroughly address complex issues
Lead others in scoping problems by identifying key issues, inputs, stakeholders, and outcomes. Tracks projects goals, requirements and design tenets across an application or suite of applications
Anticipate issues or implications that his or her ideas would have on others, and pursues mutually beneficial strategies
Uphold a consistent voice, tone, feel and look for our products
Manage a team of UX individual contributors
Identify skills that are missing in his or her team and creates a plan to address them
Effectively attract and recruit talent for the team
Provide ongoing feedback that helps direct reports to improve their performance
Provide support for career growth and long-term development
Guide and motivate direct reports as well as others
Effective at planning and prioritizing his or her team’s work
Develop and communicate realistic performance goals and standards
Effectively communicate the business strategy and how work aligns to broader goals
Hold the team and individuals accountable for results
Encourage and recognize collaborative behavior across the team
Estimate work time involved in projects and communicate changes in scope and timelines to stakeholders
Ensure direct reports are delivering high-quality and timely design
Qualifications:
Required qualifications for this position include:
Bachelor's Degree in Human-Center Design or equivalent educ/experience
7 years work experience
Ability to develop and deliver effective presentations; live, via online or virtual mediums
Ability to effectively build relationships with customers, executive management, and other stakeholders through positive interaction and problem identification and resolution
Ability to perform work independently with minimal supervision
Ability to prioritize responsibilities and to organize workload to ensure that timeframes are met and the work is successfully completed within deadlines
Online portfolio demonstrating design work
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
- Master's Degree in Human-Center Design or equivalent educ/experience
