Providence Health & Services Principal Technical Program Manager in Seattle, Washington
The Digital Innovation Group (DIG) at Providence Health & Services is a small but mighty product development and incubation team that is building next-gen tools that give patients convenient and easy access to healthcare virtually anywhere, anytime.
We are seeking a Principal Technical Program Manager, Digital Innovation Group to be responsible for defining and delivering programs with a high degree of complexity that have broad cross-organizational impact beyond the Digital Innovation Group. You work with complete independence, and people look to you to define product or system strategy. Your data-driven, business-informed approach is sought after by stakeholders from a large array of functional areas in the organization. You have broad understanding of the organization’s systems and technologies that are relevant to your area of focus. Your job is to invent, innovate, evolve, improve and simplify solutions.
In this position you will have the following responsibilities:
You build and maintain relationships with a large network of technical and non-technical stakeholders in the organization, bringing your curiosity and intelligence to understand their world, and identify hard problems appropriate for digital solutions
You study organizational problems from all viewpoints and angles, gaining a “360-degree” view of the problem, using all learning approaches available to become a problem expert
You use this deep knowledge of the problem to propose and assess solution approaches, ensuring that all stakeholders (particularly non-technical) understand the implications of each approach, so they can intelligently weigh in regarding pros and cons of each option. With your guidance, stakeholders understand solutions well enough to identify issues which would prevent the solution from being viable with patients, consumers, clinical / operational staff, or other stakeholders whose domains are impacted by the solution.
You identify near- and far-reaching implications of solution design on other systems in the organization, other system components, operational workflows, clinical areas of concern, security, privacy, regulatory compliance, financial implications, and all other non-technical stakeholder areas of interest
You are able to see the forest despite the trees, and drive toward simple solutions that are characterized by low maintenance costs and robust in the face of changes to system components controlled by other functional groups in our healthcare system
You suggest, recommend and ensure solution design and adoption of mechanisms necessary to ensure that your program or product will be successful in the long term, even when you are no longer actively involved.
Required qualifications for this position include:
BS in one of the following disciplines: Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, or other related scientific or engineering fields.
10 years of relevant industry experience shipping consumer-facing and/or enterprise software and have delivered solutions end to end.
You have demonstrated experience of being responsible for managing the lifecycle of a complex cross-functional program with considerable impact.
Extreme curiosity about “how things work”, and an abiding desire to ferret out and identify problems amenable to digital solutions, whether simple or sophisticated. You gravitate to those types of problems that if solved, are fundamental to enabling significant advances in other products or systems
Track record of effective communication with leaders up to 3 levels above and ability to present options and their inherent tradeoffs so that decisions can be made quickly and effectively
Skillful at building consensus and making thoughtful, data-driven recommendations for project / program prioritization, solution design, issue management, risk identification and mitigation
Masterful at cross-functional communication to ensure all non-technical stakeholders have everything needed to collaborate effectively with technical teams
Proven “radar” for recognizing when a given problem or solution needs additional guidance or knowledge available from other technical or non-technical experts in the organization
Strong experience delivering solutions that delight customers and stakeholders and deliver on the intended value proposition; similarly, experience with helping stakeholders understand when / why a given solution will not deliver the value / results envisioned.
Recognized thought leader with regard to program management best practices, staying abreast of evolving methodologies in other organizations and the industry as a whole, and bringing this awareness / knowledge to the groups you work with
Active involvement with mentoring technical program managers at all levels, participating in performance reviews and promotion decisions
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
Master’s degree in one of the following disciplines: Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, or other related scientific or engineering fields.
Experience with Epic’s patient-facing and/or provider-facing applications.
A small but growing team - we’re good at what we do and enjoy working together.
Autonomy and respect from day one
An environment that is scrappy, flexible, and values tenacity
Generous vacation, benefits, flexible work, and matched 403b
The best tools money can buy
